Get an insider look at the Airport! Join the Groton Business Association at Groton-New London Airport on Friday, August 19 from 10-1 for the 3rd Annual Open House and Walking Tour in celebration of NATIONAL AVIATION DAY and CONNECTICUT SUBMARINE CENTURY!
Many people don’t realize how much goes on at our local airport facility. Did you know the Army National Guard breaks down and rebuilds helicopters here? That pilots and first responders from throughout the United States and the globe travel to Groton for survival training in the event of water-ditching an aircraft?What about all those shells sea gulls drop on the runways? Ever seen a military transport aircraft up close? Want to see what the inside is like? Want to learn how to actually fly an aircraft?
Take a self-guided walking tour indoors and on the airfield ramps, including jet hanger & aircraft cockpit visits, displays by CT Air National Guard & US Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol, demonstrations at the CT Army Reserve National Guard Helicopter Repair Hangar and Survival Systems USA’s Underwater Egress Training Center, Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Equipment, visits with private planes and their owners, Aviation Academy for Youth, airfield snow plow trucks and much more.
This year also includes special events in honor of CONNECTICUT’S SUBMARINE CENTURY including the‘Up Periscope’ art exhibition on loan from the US Department of the Navy, navy aircraft and other special displays, fun activities and more. You can even make your own #submarineproud flag for the Submarine Century Flag-Line!

Please remember to wear comfortable walking shoes.Meet at the Airport’s main terminal at 155 Tower Avenue for welcome, displays, activities and a map of sites to visit during the FREE self-guided walking tour. Make a stop at the Beacon Bar & Grill located in the main terminal and offering a special Aviation Day menu. Then go at your own speed and see the places of most interest to you!
