Sebastian Merrill will read from GHOST :: SEEDS and engage in a conversation with his mother\, Martha Merrill\, about identity\, place\, and family. \nGHOST :: SEEDS is set on a remote island on the Maine coast and incorporates elements of magical realism and myth. The central tension of this collection is a dialogue between a transmasculine speaker and a figure that he conceptualizes as his ghost\, the girl-ghost of the self that he left behind to become the man he is today. Putting a queer spin on the myth of Persephone\, the girl-ghost speaks from an underworld lit by glowworms\, cut through by dark rivers\, and connected to the world above through a sea cave. The ocean serves as a throughline connecting the speaker and his lost self\, providing a setting in which everything is continually in flux: the cycle of the tides\, the pounding surf against the rocky coast\, and the ever-present threat of pollution and climate change. Kayaking through a coastline studded with islands\, alongside seals\, porpoises\, and herons\, amid swirls of floating plastic\, we are invited into a world in which the only constant is change. Alternating between prose-like elements and lyric meditations\, the book’s expansive form makes full use of the page from margin to margin\, creating space and breathing room for complicated investigations of memory\, gender\, and grief. \nGHOST :: SEEDS has already found fans in Kaveh Akbar\, Gabrielle Calvocoressi\, and Jason Schneiderman. Mark Wunderlich\, author of God of Nothingness\, describes the collection as “a moving\, nuanced\, and memorable book\, one of the most exciting debuts I’ve read in years.” \nAbout the Author:\nThe winner of the 2022 Levis Prize for Poetry from Friends of Writers\, Sebastian Merrill was selected as a member of the 2023 Get the Word Out inaugural poetry cohort for debut writers from Poets & Writers. A staff-scholar for the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in 2022 and 2023 and the Summer 2023 Warren Wilson MFA Alumni Residency Fellow\, Sebastian has also received support from Tin House Workshop and the Juniper Summer Writing Institute. The recipient of the Rodney Jack Scholarship from Friends of Writers\, he holds an MFA in Poetry from Warren Wilson College and a BA from Wellesley College. \nAbout Martha Merrill:\nMartha Merrill served for 14 years as Dean of Admission & Financial Aid at Connecticut College where she worked for nearly 30 years in both admissions and advancement. DESCRIPTION:Bank Square Books presents an author signing with Margaret Moore for the book Bold\, Brave and Breathless. \nAbout the Book\nWhen Margaret Anne Mary Moore’s umbilical cord prolapsed and caused a five-minute deprivation during her February 1997 birth and delivery\, she was given no chance of survival. As she was being connected to respirators in the neonatal intensive care unit\, her parents were told that she would not live through the night. No medical personnel can explain why she survived and began to breathe on her own; they have labeled it a miraculous recovery. Margaret came home with cerebral palsy\, a physical disability that impedes her ability to independently sit\, stand\, and walk. She relies on a wheelchair and walker. Given her speech impediment that makes her verbalizations unintelligible to those beyond her immediate family and close friends\, she also relies on an Assistive and Augmentative Communication device\, a specialized computer that allows her to type in her thoughts and have them read aloud by its synthesized voice. Margaret has needed assistance with feeding\, dressing\, tending to personal care needs\, and transferring between her assistive equipment and furniture all her life. \nJust before her second birthday\, Margaret’s father died of a rare form of stomach cancer. She and her two older brothers were raised by their mom Anne\, a single mother who believes in the power of perseverance\, teaching the children that they should use the determination that their father Terrence had in his cancer battle as inspiration for overcoming obstacles to achieve their greatest ambitions. Because Anne recognized the intelligence that Margaret had in early childhood\, she enrolled her in regular education when she was entering preschool. Using assistive technology to complete her work\, Margaret attended normal classes and was held to the same academic standards as her able-bodied peers from preschool through her graduate studies. With her walker\, she grew up playing adaptive soccer and running competitively. She has been a Girl Scout since five years old\, earned her Girl Scout Gold Award\, and has even participated in extreme sports such as ice skating\, parasailing\, and ziplining. She now shares her childhood experiences in her debut memoir Bold\, Brave\, and Breathless: Reveling in Childhood’s Splendiferous Glories While Facing Disability and Loss. \nAbout the Author\nMargaret earned her MFA in creative nonfiction and poetry from Fairfield University’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program last year and is also a 2020 magna cum laude graduate of Fairfield University with a bachelor’s degree in English/Creative Writing and a minor in psychology. She currently works as a book editor and the marketing coordinator of an independent publisher\, Woodhall Press\, and also as an ambassador for her communication device manufacturer\, PRC-Saltillo. She presents at national and international conferences multiple times each year\, advocating for disability inclusion\, accommodation\, and tolerance of diversity in higher education and other sectors. In this workshop\, people will be creating their own mandalas from their hearts to make space for additional love in the midst of this busy holiday season. \nAbout Sandi Gold: \nAuthor Sandi Gold\, who has a BFA from Boston University\, has been featured in The New York Times\, People Magazine\, and ABC Television’s 20/20. She’s been interviewed on National Public Radio and its Connecticut affiliate. She was the keynote speaker for the Calgary Cancer Center in Canada and has spoken at Brown University\, and the Brain Tumor Society in Boston.
